Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an intern at a small studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
